High School Students in the Netherlands Showing Their Talents on the “Chinese Bridge” Preliminary Co

 

On 26th June, the Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands was immersed in a happy atmosphere. Contestants from 23 high schools in the Netherlands came together for the “The Second Chinese Proficiency Competition for High School in the Netherlands and The Third ‘Chinese Bridge’ World Chinese Proficiency Competition For High School Students”. This competition was jointly held by Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands and Confucius Institute The Hague. Teachers and parents of the Contestants about a hundred people watched the competition. News media like Xinhua News Agency and International Broadcasting Station of the Netherlands recorded the whole competition.

 
At 10 a.m. sharp, the competition started. Mr. Zhang Jinxiong from the Chinese Embassy of the Netherlands addressed an opening speech.
The competition consists of paper test, speech and talent show three parts, in which Contestants can fully display their Chinese proficiency and understanding of Chinese culture. Contestant Ji aijia’s told her unbreakable bond with Chinese speech “I’m fascinated by Chinese” which was remarkable in both voice and affection. Vincent van Bergen told his experience in learning Chinese. The talent show part was more impressive: fluent story telling, wonderful dancing, melodious traditional Chinese music like Jasmine Flower and The Moon Over a Fountain. All Contestants fulfilled the theme of the competition in course of displaying themselves: Learning Chinese happily, growing up healtyily.
   
Elenora Hu's mother hold that the process of competition was more important than the result; she hoped by participating in Chinese Bridge Competition, her daughter could earn Chinese better and enhance her self-confidence; Ms Hu told the correspondent from the Xinhua News Agency: "My daughter told me: 'When I saw myself in the mirror, I feel I’m a Chinese, so I want to learn Chinese because that is part of my life.' "Ms Hu added:" Here, everyone strives for the same goal for they all have the same interest and can exchange idea with each other. This is more important than winning the competition. Whether she will win or not, my daughter will continue to learn Chinese."
    
Chinese teachers Hilversum middle school Pang Ruoling and Qiao Shi told us: "Last year, three students of our school went to China on behalf of the Netherlands to participate in the semi-final and final of “Chinese Bridge”; their stay in China left them an unforgettable memory. Their trip to the China led to a great response in other students; they are all looking forward to winning the opportunity to visit China."
16-year-old Dutch girl Annemarie has been studying Chinese in a Dutch school for 3 years. She said that Chinese language as an elective course has been opened for 4 years in our school; among 800 students in the upper school, about 100 students chose Chinese. Her father Mr de Jong said with emotion, "The Netherlands has close ties with China in trade, so it is important to learn Chinese. Now people’s enthusiasm in learning Chinese is growing every day."
   
Near the end of competition, all Contestants from Erasmiaans Gymnasium in Rotterdam presented a song for the audiences, "Beijing welcomes you", which pushed the atmosphere to a climax.
All contestants are awarded fine prizes and certificates. Three contestants from Erasmiaans Gymnasium and Hilversum Middle School will go to Chongqing to attend the semi-finals and final of the third "Chinese Bridge" Competition as representative of all Dutch students. one of the winners Teun de planque said: "I am pleased to win, and also looking forward to the finals in Chongqing." Finally, Mr. Zhang Jinxiong from Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands, Mr. Luo Ping from the Education department, and Professor Zhou Jiajuan from Confucius Institute The Hague awarded prizes for all winners.
 
Youth is the future of the world. "Chinese Bridge" is a bridge to China. The annual Chinese Proficiency Competition is sure to build a bridge of friendship between the Dutch people and the Chinese people.
